The perimeter of the western basin of the port has got platforms along its entire length. The main basin has a surface of approximately 236 acres and a maneuver circle with a diameter of about 400 meters. The depth of the main basin ranges between -8.00 and -10.00m (MSL).

Two smaller sub-basins are situated at both ends of the north side of the western sector of the port: the basin of the boat harbor in the west, with a surface of about 12 acres and usable depth of -3.00 m (MSL) approximately and the basin of the small fishing port (ichthyoskala), surface of about 31 acres and usable depth of -4.00m (MSL) approximately.

Eastern basin (eastern sector of the port)

After the completion of the dredging project in late 2015, the eastern basin of the port has a depth of -12.00 m (MSL) in a 500 acres surface and a maneuver circle with a diameter of about 500 meters. The approach of ships has been ensured by the excavation of a navigation channel with a total length of 3.5 km, minimum width of 160.0 meters and depth of -12.50 m (MSL).

Based on the approved Master Plan, the dredging of the eastern basin is to be extended to a total area of about 667 acres, a maneuver circle with a diameter of about 730 m and final depth of -15,00m (MSL)

Inner port infrastructure

Platforms and piers in the western sector of the port

Western coasting platform

Platform 295.0m long and of useful depth -10.00 m (MSL) , which is used by the passenger ships that carry out the ferry connection to Samothrace and, occasionally, to the islands of the northern and southeastern Aegean . The platform has got four (4) ramps for mooring of passenger ships.

Northwest pier and tourist boat harbour

The quay is about 150.0m long and 40 to 50m wide. The southern platform of the pier has got usable depth -7.40m (MSL). The northern platform of the pier along with a part of the north coastal platform are forming a small boat harbor, with a total length of platforms 340.0m and -3.00m (MSL) usable depth .

North-coast commercial platform

This platform extends easterly of the small harbour of yachts and has a length of about 260.0 meters. The platform has usable depth -8.00m (MSL) and is used for berthing and handling bulk (mostly) and general cargo.

Commercial platforms in the north pier

The main (north) commercial pier in the western sector of the port is in the form of a “Γ”. The western and southern platforms of the pier (length 150.0 and 260.0 meters respectively) have a usable depth of -8.00m (MSL) and are used for berthing and handling bulk (mostly) and general cargo.

Fishing port

It is sited in the north-eastern edge of the western sector of the port. The total length of the perimeter platforms stands at 480.0 meters. The usable depth of these platforms is approximately -4.00m (MSL) .

Container terminal (SEMPO )

The total length of the container terminal platforms is about 730.0 meters, of which 500.0 meters can be used for vertical cargo handling (Lo-Lo) (quay wall foundation level -14.13 m, MSL). The remaining 230 meters can be used for mixed (vertical and / or horizontal) cargo handling (Ro-Ro/Lo-Lo) (quay wall foundation level -11.63 m, MSL) .

Land infrastructure and E / M port facilities

Overland road and rail infrastructure at the port

The western sector of the port has got three road entrances (gates), one west of the Customs House, one near the passenger train station and a third road access at the height of the main (northern) pier through Souniou street.

To the land area in the western sector of the port of Alexandroupolis also end four (4) branches of the existing rail network. In mid-2015, the project of “Railway Connection of the new Container Terminal” also completed.

Internal roads in the western sector of the port

The land surfaces in the western sector of the port are on the most part asphalted.

Waiting areas for vehicles and passenger traffic
