Alexandroupolis Port Authority S.A. bears the responsibility of the unique major port in Thrace, which is one of the gates of Northern Greece , along with the ports of Thessaloniki and Kavala, for the transportation of goods to and from the countries of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, with significant exportation and is an important transportation and commercial hub of the region.
The port is one of the largest Greek ports in disposable land area, which is further extended through the exploitation of excavation products of the project of the portbasin's and the ship channel's dredging, completed in late 2015.
It has a large new Container Terminal with high quality flooring, facilities for equipment and network installation and sufficient depths to accommodate large containerships, all of which are available as a whole.
The port is the primary communication link between the mainland and the island of Samothrace and secondary communication link for the islands of the North Aegean Sea.
